From Hesitation to Heartfelt Bond: How a Special Kitten Won Over a Cat-Loving Family

At just eight months old, a unique kitten arrived at the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee (IBKC) in Charleston, West Virginia, hoping for a second chance. Born without her left eye and nostril, and with a bobtail and a slightly asymmetrical brain, she was unlike any other but full of love and personality.

“She immediately captured our hearts,” said Kathy Lucas, a board member at IBKC. “Her left side didn’t develop completely, but she’s perfectly healthy and breathes and sees just fine on the right.”

No Special Care, Just Special Love

Veterinarians thoroughly examined her to ensure she didn’t require specialized treatment. Their conclusion? She was healthy and perfectly capable of living a joyful life.

“She’s a petite, trusting girl with loads of personality,” Kathy added. They named her Zara, and from the moment she arrived in her foster home, it was clear she was ready to love and be loved.

She made herself comfortable right away, curling up on the bed and radiating joy. Despite her differences, Zara had an undeniable charm that drew people in instantly.

Finding the Right Family

The rescue team wanted to make sure Zara found a family who could appreciate her one-of-a-kind nature and give her the affectionate life she deserved.

That’s when Kerry Drabish received a message about Zara. Kerry was excited, but her husband was a little unsure about adopting a sixth cat. Still, they agreed to meet her.

The moment they walked in, Zara confidently hopped onto their laps like she had always belonged there. Even Kerry’s husband couldn’t resist her playful spirit and loving eyes.

“We fell in love with her instantly,” Kerry said.

From Zara to Idgie: A New Chapter Begins

After deciding to adopt, the couple renamed her Idgie. As they completed the paperwork, Idgie sat by their side, as if supervising her own adoption.

“She checked every toy, greeted each family member, and made herself right at home,” the rescue team shared.

Once in her new home, Idgie confidently explored every corner. She introduced herself to the other cats like a true social butterfly, as if saying, “I’m home and I plan to stay.”

Winning Over Dad’s Heart

The most surprising bond was between Idgie and Kerry’s husband the one who was hesitant at first. She became his shadow, curling up beside him whenever he sat down, whether he was reading or working at the computer.

“She’s a sweet cuddler with a mischievous side,” Kerry laughed. “She talks a lot, especially at dinner time, and loves to snuggle. But her favorite person is definitely my husband.”

A Small Cat with a Huge Heart

Today, Idgie is the smallest member of the family, but she has the biggest presence. She’s thriving in a home filled with love, companionship, and endless cuddles. For a man who once said “no more cats,” she’s become his favorite companion and a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life come when we least expect them.
