While hiking near their home in Elmira, Ontario, Kaitlyn Mullin and her boyfriend Austin Ropp expected nothing more than a peaceful nature walk. But what they found instead was a tiny tabby-and-white kitten emerging from the bushes clearly exhausted, weak, and in need of urgent care.
“He had a swollen eye and looked like he was in pain,” Kaitlyn recalls. “But somehow, he still had the strength to meow at us.”

Swift Action That Changed a Life
Without hesitation, the couple gently picked up the kitten, who offered no resistance. They immediately rushed back to their car, searching for a nearby vet clinic. Fortunately, they located one that was open and brought the kitten in for examination.
The vet determined the kitten just about three weeks old had a serious eye infection, most likely caused by the feline herpes virus. Sadly, the condition had progressed to the point where the eye had ruptured. “He likely wouldn’t have survived much longer if we hadn’t found him,” Kaitlyn shares.

Welcoming Uno Into Their Lives
Despite the difficult start, this little kitten soon named Uno was about to begin a new chapter. Kaitlyn and Austin knew instantly they couldn’t leave him behind. As lifelong animal lovers, they opened their hearts and home to Uno.
“He fit in perfectly,” says Kaitlyn. “He’s incredibly sweet, energetic, and playful. You’d never guess he only has one eye.”

Adjusting Like a Pro
Uno adapted to life with one eye without much trouble. Since he likely never had sight in that eye, the adjustment was seamless. Today, he’s a lively and spirited part of the household. He even enjoys leash walks with his parents and occasionally joins them at work earning the honorary title of “office mascot.”

Playful, Clumsy, and Full of Joy
As any young cat would, Uno plays nonstop pouncing on toys, chewing anything within reach, and keeping his parents on their toes. Though he occasionally bumps into furniture due to limited depth perception, his energy is unmatched.
“He’s one of the most active cats we’ve ever met,” Kaitlyn laughs. “Even if he’s a bit clumsy, it just adds to his charm.”

A Message of Compassion and Hope
Kaitlyn and Austin hope that Uno’s story inspires others to give special-needs pets a chance. Cats with one eye or any disability can live full, happy lives. “They give back so much love,” says Kaitlyn. “Uno is living proof that every animal deserves a second chance.”

Final Thoughts
What began as an ordinary hike turned into a life-changing moment for both Uno and his new family. Months later, Uno is thriving, bringing endless love and joy into Kaitlyn and Austin’s lives.
“Uno is family now,” Kaitlyn says with a smile. “He’s truly one of the best things to ever happen to us.”
