One morning in Delray Beach, Florida, a woman’s quiet routine was interrupted by the heartbreaking cries of a stray kitten in her yard. His tiny body was fragile, his orange fur so filthy it looked brown, and his eyes sealed shut from a severe skin condition. The kitten was in agony and all alone.
Thankfully, this story doesn’t end in tragedy. The woman reached out to Carmen Weinberg, founder of the Animal Friends Project, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating stray animals. Carmen wasted no time.

Carmen Responds and Hope Arrives
When Carmen arrived, the kitten later named Simba was sitting motionless, clearly exhausted and in pain. Covered in dirt and mange, his ears were crusted, and his skin was scaly and inflamed. Despite his suffering, he slowly walked toward Carmen and let out a heartbreaking meow, pleading for help.
Without hesitation, Carmen offered him food, and Simba immediately began eating. She gently coaxed him into a carrier with more food and took him home to begin his road to recovery.

Simba’s Healing Journey Begins
Over the next few days, Carmen provided Simba with intensive care. She used coconut oil to soften the thick crust on his ears and head and carefully brushed it away with a flea comb. She gave him soothing baths, healing ointments, and the safety he had never known.
Simba began shedding the hardened layer of mange, revealing a vibrant orange coat underneath. Slowly but surely, he was coming back to life.

A Whole New World Through Open Eyes
After several days of gentle care, a beautiful moment arrived Simba opened his eyes for the first time since his rescue. No longer crusted shut, they revealed a warm, trusting gaze full of curiosity and gratitude. His spirit was waking up, too.
He started gaining weight, playing more, and even rolling onto his back, asking for belly rubs. The kitten who had once been too weak to stand now ran, purred, and explored the world around him.

The Tabby King Finds His Kingdom
Simba stayed with Carmen for six months, healing and growing into a majestic cat with a glowing orange coat and a personality to match. Whenever Carmen walks into the room, Simba flops onto his side to greet her, showing affection and appreciation for the second chance she gave him.
“Simba loves being touched. He rolls onto his back so we can pet his belly,” Carmen shared, smiling. “He’s truly one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever met.”

One Person Can Make All the Difference
Simba’s story reminds us that even the smallest cries for help deserve to be answered. Thanks to one compassionate woman and Carmen’s dedication, this kitten not only survived he thrived.
